Uganda: NGO to Sue Government

Kampala — THE Uganda Debt Network, an NGO, has threatened to drag the Government to court over the purchase of expensive cars for Cabinet ministers.

Patrick Tumwebaze, the network chief, said:

"We want to use the courts of law and demonstrations to send a message to the public that they deserve a responsible government."

Tumwebaze was recently speaking at a press conference in Kampala.

He said the Multilateral Debt Relief had reduced Uganda's debt to $1.468b (about sh2 trillion) in 2005, but it had risen to $4b (about sh8 trillion) in three years.

"Uganda's infant mortality rate is at 39%, clean water is accessed by 54% and 40% of the budget is foreign-funded. It's not logical to spend on luxuries," Tumwebaze noted.

Paullina Apolot, a network official, said MPs had failed to protect public funds.
