Ghana: Zoomlion to Address Social Problems Confronting Communities

Samuel Agbewode

5 August 2009

Ho — The Volta Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr. Anthony Adzomani, says the organisation is extending its operational activities beyond the promotion of sanitation to other social activities, to help address problems facing people in many of the communities in the region.

He said the operations of the company in the region had seen much improvement, particularly in the areas of sanitary situations, as compared to the past, but was quick to add that a lot more needed to be done in terms of education that would change the attitudes of people about waste generation and management.

Speaking to Volta File in the regional capital Ho, Mr. Adzomani disclosed that Zoomlion had trained and employed 8,875 youth as personnel of the organisation, as well as another160 sanitation guards to assist in waste management in the region.

Mr. Adzomani pointed out that Zoomlion, as part of its operational policy, had made available sanitation improvement packages for district and municipal assemblies, where refuse haulage services are provided, a development, he observed, which had culminated in the improved sanitary conditions in the region.

He noted that there was the need for people to complement the efforts of Zoomlion in waste management by ensuring that they reduce waste generation in their respective communities, as excessive waste generation was of major concern to the company.

The Volta Regional Zoomlion Manager stressed on the need for society to accord due respect to their staff, because some people in the various communities, most of the time, made derogative statements about the personnel when they are performing their duties, which Mr. Adzomani said was not healthy, since such negative practices demoralised the workers.

Mr. Adzomani explained that apart from the promotion of sanitation, the company in the performance of its duties, should be seen as creating employment for the youth in the various communities, adding that the company also trained the youth to acquire skills such as tricycle riding, which would lead them to the further handling of other heavy duty equipment in the company.

He said so far, three ladies from Ho had been promoted from tricycle riding to learn how to operate heavy machines, and said the three were currently pursuing courses in the operation of heavy duty equipment in China.

Mr. Adzomani mentioned water services to communities as part of its social services, and said the company had identified the issue of non-availability of water in some communities, which posed serious health hazards to them, hence the adoption of water tanker services to the needed communities in some parts of the region.

He continued that with the water services being provided to the deprived communities, as well as the employment of artisans such as electricians and sprayers, most of the people have began to appreciate the role being played by Zoomlion, because the social intervention programmes were necessary to promote the economic activities of the people.

One of the crucial disclosures made by Mr. Adzomani, was that Zoomlion would soon form youth clubs in schools, which would be called "Zoom Kids" at Kpando, Hohoe and Akatsi, to educate the youth on waste manage techniques, and the need to observe personal hygiene.
