Nigeria: Group Wants ASUU to Suspend Strike

Abuja — The Civil Society Alliance of Nigeria (CSAN) has called on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend the ongoing strike in order to save the education sector.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, National Coordinator of the organization, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed, said suspension of the strike was necessary so that students would resume their normal studies.

"Much as we are aware of the agitation of the union and its justification, we make bold to say that university lecturers should in the interest of the thousands of students roaming the street throughout the federation call off the ongoing strike.

"The strike poses a great danger to the nation's educational development and is capable of truncating the much orchestrated federal government's seven-point agenda and Nigeria's dream of joining the list of developed countries by the year 2020," he said.

The organization commended the federal government for increasing the lecturer's salaries by 40 percent, and called on the government to ensure that it engages ASUU in a constructive dialogue over the strike.

The organization also appealed to President Umaru Musa Yar'adua to members of National Assembly to ensure that more funds are allocated to the education sector in order to move the nation forward.

I think people should appeal first to the government to meet all the demands of ASUU for once, because if union don't strike in Nigeria, the government don't consider them for any upgrade in welfare
