Nigeria: Muslim Lawyers Condemn Police Over Extrajudicial Killings

Abuja — The Muslim Lawyers' Association of Nigeria (MULAN) has condemned the Nigerian Police over extra judicial killings of suspected leaders of the Boko Haram sect that clashed with security forces in some parts of the North recently.

MULAN National President Adekola Mustapha said in a statement that "The Nigerian Police has once again exhibited their incompetence and lack of professionalism when it mattered most."

He frowned at the unlawful killing of Boko Haram leader Mohammed Yusuf and suspected sponsor of the sect Alhaji Buji Foi.

"It is unfortunate that the Nigerian Police has once again foreclosed a golden opportunity to ascertain the truth and unveil the people behind the sect to be able to know how to permanently avoid it," the association said.

Mustapha accused the Borno State Police Commissioner of complacency in the extra judicial killings, saying the police made up various versions of the story to justify the killings.

MULAN said the police chief should resign his appointment because "the commissioner of police has not demonstrated any serious understanding of the responsibility placed on him."

The association warned the police against indiscriminate arrest of Muslims saying MULAN will "stand up against injustice being meted out to innocent Muslims." The association also called on its members to provide legal support to all innocent Muslims arrested or killed in the wake of the crisis and urged northern governors to provide assistance to dependants of victims of the crisis.
