Zimbabwe: West's Smear Campaign Unwarranted

opinion

Harare — THE past week has been replete with events which, under normal circumstances should see the coming down of the curtain in the Western inspired and locally-driven unwarranted criticism of President Mugabe which they unleash on every other move he takes in pursuit of the betterment of Zimbabwe.

This drive, which is inspired by nothing but malice for President Mugabe the man, our freedom fighters, Zanu-PF the party and the party's offspring, Zimbabwe the country, has been on the destructive tail for the past decade or so with regime change being the expected outcome.

Not even the formation of the inclusive Government has stopped the dreamers which forces us to conclude that there is more to the vilification of the President than meets the eye.

Along the way, the drive has packed itself with illegal economic sanctions against the country and these have destroyed the economy and most recently we have seen the composing of the song "Mugabe's intransigence and lack of paradigm shift on the part of Zanu-PF which is slowing down the implementation of the Global Political Agreement", the parents of the inclusive Government as the new song from the West's chaotic political hymn book.

This is exactly what President Mugabe, in typical political maturity that he has long possessed, did when he took along with him an array of representatives from the three political parties in the inclusive Government including the leadership level to the 2009 Smart- Partnership Dialogue in Munyonyo Uganda recently.

Deputy Prime Ministers Arthur Mutambara and Thokozani Khupe were part of the delegation that went with the President Mugabe to Uganda.

This gesture by President Mugabe should be message enough to those who claim to support the inclusive Government that the unity we now have is the basis upon which President Mugabe and the rest of the country's leadership laid the dreams and aspirations of the people of this country on. Instead of making unwarranted attacks on the person of President Mugabe, the arm chair critics should instead come forward and play their part to ensure the success of the inclusive Government.

President Mugabe is a man of peace, whose wish is to see the unity of Zimbabwe, which would lead to the betterment of the economic plight of the majority of its citizens.

The second most critical event that swept its way past this gracious week on Zimbabwe politics was the historic convening of the National Security Council which the President chairs.

This, of course, was the inaugural meeting since the formation of the inclusive Government, and the nation should be more than happy to be told that its members agreed to strive to ensure peace and prosperity of the nation.

Prior to this meeting, the Western media and some in our midst had gone on a hysterical overdrive by labelling the failure of the NSC to meet as reluctance by President Mugabe to implement the so-called outstanding issues in the GPA when they have not dared to say anything about sanctions and the devastating effects they are having on the people yet the GPA is clear on the need to have the sanctions lifted.

The same people also christened the service chiefs as Mugabe's hardliners, henchmen among a plethora of epithets in an apparent attempt to label them as enemies of progress in the inclusive Government.

The service chiefs, the defenders of our sovereignty have also been accused of playing political games by "refusing" to salute Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai yet the law clearly states that they are mandated to salute only President Mugabe by virtue of him being Commander-In-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

Thirdly, was the meeting between President Mugabe and the Sadc Parliamentary Forum, where the President told the forum that the inclusive Government was working well but the President was quick enough to remind the forum about the devastating effects of the sanctions.

Said President Mugabe, "the British say sanctions are targeted and have nothing to do with the economy but have everything to do with Mugabe" Yet they crippled virtually every sector of economic development of this country, but some even have the audacity to claim that Zimbabwe is not under any form of sanctions.

Such people need a serious reality check that will not only sober them from their political slumber but one that will make them realise that the battle to fend off the West's possessive interest in the political economics of this country is not President Mugabe's alone but is for all Zimbabweans.

The West's interest in Zimbabwe's politics is not out of love for the people of this country but it is because of their unprecedented pursuit of the country's resources hence their not-so wise decision to vilify their perceived stumbling bloc to this grand plan, President Mugabe.

President Mugabe's resolute fight against Western attempts to maintain their grip on our land, which President Mugabe duly returned to its rightful owners, should be given the credit it duly deserves.

The West have used a number of platforms which they have at their disposal to trash the huge strides that the President has made for both his people and his country. This brings us to the fourth event of the past week which, if not carefully watched would see the regime change agenda being taken to another level, that of systematic and distilled information manipulation by the media.

This writer is referring to the coming back of the proponents of the West personality campaign against President Mugabe and Zanu-PF, BBC and CNN.

Over the years, these media houses have soiled Zimbabwe's name.

This notion has given birth to sustained attacks on the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor who now stands accused of destroying the once "vibrant economy" by continuously and recklessly printing money that fuelled inflation which destroyed the country.

Further analysis of the above assessment will lead one to realise that the so-called vibrant economy was anchored on whites' control of the economy which President Mugabe sought to and still seeks to reverse by empowering the people of this country through the land reform and black economic empowerment programmes.

Sadly, the response that President Mugabe got from the whites was the imposition of the sanctions that the people are reeling under.

The progressive world hopes that luminaries like President Mugabe will continue to inspire down-trodden people the world over to step up to the plate and claim their heritage.
