Addis Ababa — Member of US President Obama's Cabinet, Ambassador Ron Kirk is here in Addis with the aim to boost trade relationship between Ethiopia and United States.
The ambassador arrives here yesterday for a three-day long visit leading a deligation composed of US private sector and Congressional delegation, to "learn more about trade challenges and opportunities in the Ethiopia." A statement from United States Embassy also indicated the visit was intended to explore the US-Ethiopian trade and investment relationship as well as AGOA implementation.
The office of United States Trade Representative (USTR) to which ambassador Kirk is a Principal trade advisor, is responsible for the development and oversight of US trade policy, including strategy, negotiation, implementation and enforcement of multilateral, regional/bilateral and sector-specific trade agreements.
These include the ongoing Doha Development Agenda multilateral trade negotiations, as well as current and pending Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
Thus, Ambassador Ron Kirk will discuss with Ethiopian government officials including Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on the need for economic reforms, and Ethiopia's World Trade Organisation (WTO) accession process.
The first African American mayor of Dallas, Kirk would also be reviewing U.S.-Africa trade policy and consult with a wide range of stakeholders, including with representatives of the private sector and visit several industries including Ethiopian shoe factory, Peacock.
