Ghana: Kaneshie Bridge Open After Reconstruction

Naa Bettey Nelson

10 August 2009

The Kaneshie Bridge, after being closed for repair work some weeks ago, has now been opened for the use of the general public, and seems to have been abandoned by pedestrians, as they prefer to use the other footbridge.

In a conversation with some bridge users, they said they were not used to the first bridge, especially as it had been closed for sometime.

Some also said the former state of the bridge had created fear in them, and even though it had been repaired, they were still afraid to use it. But this makes the other footbridge overcrowded all the time, giving pickpockets and bag snatchers a field day.

The Accra file noted that the contractor had done a good job with the repairs of the footbridge.

All the rusty and damaged rails have been repaired, and re-painted as well.

Some pedestrians the Accra file spoke to said they felt very comfortable, and were pleased that the hand rails had been repaired.

The Accra file is therefore urging all hawkers and pedestrians to use the reconstructed bridge, since it is safe when walking on it.
