Kampala — President Museveni is back from Zambian capital Lusaka where he had gone to attend the Third Ordinary Summit of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region yesterday.
The conference comprised African countries that share lakes Victoria, Albert, Kivu, Edward, Mweru and Tanganyika, commonly known as the Great Lakes, and deals with four main themes; peace and security, democracy and good governance, economic development and regional integration, humanitarian and social issues.
A press statement from State House said Mr Museveni was received on return last evening by the Head of Public Service, Mr John Mitala, the Chief of the Defence Forces, Gen. Aronda Nyakairima and the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, among others.
It is understood that delegates at the conference discussed the Great Lakes region's multiple but perennial problems such as insecurity and instability, famine and starvation.
The first Summit was held in Dar-es-Salaam Tanzania in November 2004, with Nairobi Kenya hosting the second in December 2006. At the Nairobi Summit, delegates signed a pact on Security, Stability and Development.
The Great Lakes countries include Uganda, Sudan, Zambia, Kenya, Congo, Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, DR Congo, Tanzania and Rwanda.
