Zambia: Country's Construction Industry Flourishes - Veep

VICE-President George Kunda has said the construction industry in Zambia has continued to flourish, indicating that the economy is slowly recovering from the global economic crunch.

Mr Kunda said in Serenje yesterday that it was gratifying to note that Zambians at every level were now fully involved in construction business which was encouraging.

The vice-president said this at a rally held at Mabonde Basic School to drum up support for MMD candidate in this Thursday's by-election Solomon Musonda.

"The whole Zambia is under construction, houses are being built almost everywhere; construction has become an in thing in Zambia which is a sign that the economy is on the right path to recovery," Mr Kunda said.

He said that it was the duty of the Government to grow the economy that was why it was encouraging investors to engage in mining and oil exploration ventures in North Western, Western and Eastern provinces.

"We need investors to come to Zambia and engage in mining as well as tourism ventures. Serenje has got a good terrain to support tourism and fertile soils too. When we have more investors then the tax base will be widened and the Government will have enough resources to take care of its people," Mr Kunda said.

He was also saddened that Zambia lacked medical doctors and Serenje was lucky to have one in Dr Musonda. Mr Kunda urged the people of Chitambo to elect Dr Musonda as their MP so he would assist in tackling health problems that the constituency was facing.

He took a swipe at Patriotic Front (PF) leader Michael Sata's change of stance on Chinese investors. Mr Kunda said that Mr Sata last year said he would embrace Chinese investors but he had changed his position over the matter.

The by-election is also being contested by UNIP's Timothy Kapolo, FDD has floated Evans Chola and the PF-UPND pact is fielding Chanda Mutale.
