South Africa: Toxic Talk About Health System

Johannesburg — THIS is dangerous stuff. Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande, who is also the South African Communist Party (SACP) secretary-general, threatened "war" last week against those who oppose the national health insurance (NHI) scheme the African National Congress (ANC) wants to introduce.

At a rally in the Free State to celebrate the SACP's birthday, Nzimande said the "capitalist classes" who were trying to discredit the system must prepare for a huge battle. He promised, too, that under the new system, the rich would pay more, and the poor would pay nothing, but "everybody will get the same quality treatment".
