Nigeria: Can the National Assembly Finally Stop Gas Flaring?

Abuja — It is no longer news that Nigeria flares gas in the oil rich Niger Delta region since the commencement of oil exploration in the region 50 years ago, but what is new is that the present National Assembly is in the process of enacting a law that will finally stop, prohibit and punish oil companies that flares gas.

Successive administrations seems to either not know the effects of flaring gas or did not really care much about it not to talk of doing anything to bring to end it. This may not be unconnected to the fact that not only the leaders but majority of Nigerians are ignorant of the effects, consequence not to talk of the huge economic lose to the nation.
