Uganda: City Water Shortage Worsens

Kampala — THE water shortage reported two weeks ago in Kampala has worsened forcing people to resort to protected wells or springs.

Homes, government institutions and business establishments in Makerere,

Mulago, Ntinda, Kisasi, Bukoto and Naguru reported that their taps had remained dry since Wednesday morning.

The water had not been reconnected by 5:00pm.

Customers in other suburbs like Mutungo, Kanyanya, Rubaga, Namungoona, Nabweru, and Busabala said water supply is often disconnected during

the day and reconnected after midnight.

The National Water and Sewage Cooperation (NWSC) spokesperson, Ruth Ijang,

said there was no alternative but to ration the water.

The engineers attributed the shortage to lake pollution and the long drought.

The chief engineer Andrew Sekayizzi said: "The water is dirty. Treating and

cleaning it to the required standard takes more time and funds."

Records show that there are about 130,000 connections on the city water network.
