Kampala — MUFTI Ramadhan Mubajje, MP Abdu Katuntu and Tabliq sect leader Sulaiman Kakeeto have met Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir over the Darfur crisis.
Another Ugandan Muslim cleric, Hajji Jawaad Kezaala, was also among many regional leaders who met Bashir in Khartoum in a bid to find ways of ending the crisis. Katuntu said the meeting called for the involvement of local people in the reconciliation process.
"Most people who live in Darfur are Muslims. As Muslim leaders, we are concerned about the plight of our fellow believers," Katuntu stated. "The meeting was not political," he added. The delegates were drawn from Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and the Congo.
Mubajje called for unity of the Muslims in Sudan. The leaders adopted a proposal to immediately carry out an independent investigation into the Darfur conflict and examine the effects of the international court on Africa. The court wants Bashir tried for war crimes in Darfur.
Bashir accused the US, the UK and France of attempting to control Sudan's natural resources. Bashir also told Muslim leaders that the Third World should know that no American or European leader had been charged with war crimes at the international court even though they were guilty.
