West Africa: U.S. Donates Satellite to Ecowas

Abuja — United States has donated Mobile Satellite Communication System to Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Stand-by Force (ESF) to be used as a communication tool anywhere the force is deployed.

The chief of Staff of ECOWAS Stand-by Force, Hassan Lai said the tool, which has internet, printer and all communication facilities, is significant to any military institution and most especially ESF.

He made the statement at the official handing-over of ECOWAS Deployable Satellite System (DSS) by representatives of the US Government to ECOWAS stand-by Force in Abuja.

"Any organisation that does not breast up to the challenges and opportunities that technology has brought about, as it portends to ICT does not belong to the 21st century" he said.

He expressed gratitude to U.S. government for the wonderful support and capacity building, adding that the aims and objectives of the project were justifiable with resounding success.

ECOWAS commissioner of Political Affairs and Security, Celestin Talaki said America government supply of the antenna is vital and a key element without which the system could never function.

U.S. representative, ERIES Project Manager from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), Mr. Richard J. Baisley said DSS works everywhere in the world with full data capacity.
