The Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, the Most Rev. Philip Naameh, has asked Christians to collectively fight the legalization of abortion in Ghana because it was un-Catholic to have abortions in Catholic societies.
He said Roman Catholics must practice sexual abstinence and desist from distributing condoms to the public.He also them to get involved in politics to ensure the effective governance of the country.
He said when Christians influence politics, "It would help bring the virtues of Christ into the administration of the country and, therefore, minimize the vices associated with the country's governance."
The Most Rev. Naameh was addressing a National Convention of about 800 Knights of St. John International, at Nyankpala in the Tolon/Kumbungu District of the Northern Region over the weekend.
The convention brought together members of the Knights, a charitable society in the Catholic Church, from Ghana, the United States, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Togo.
The theme of the convention was, "Evangelism through Knighthood," and it was aimed at equipping the knights for evangelism.
Mr. Moses Bukari Mabengba, the Deputy Northern Regional Minister, called on Christians to live upright lives and emulate John the Baptist in the Bible, who stood against vices and died championing the truth.
He urged the knights to be shining examples of the Catholic Community and inspire others to build a better society.
Mr. Mabengba said Christians should serve as the catalyst for the development of the country.
The Supreme Subordinate Ladies Auxiliary of Knights of St. John International, Noble Sister Justina Dazie, challenged Knights to live exemplary lives, rekindle their prayer lives and uphold discipline.
She urged them to respect the supreme constitution of the Catholic Church, be sensitive to the plight of others and be dedicated and loyal to the Church.
Archbishop decries sex before job culture
The Most Rev Thomas Kwaku Mensah, the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Kumasi Archdiocese of the Catholic Church, has spoken on the need for male employers to stop demanding sex from female job seekers before employing or promoting them.
He said the practice was not only immoral and sinful but also against the human rights of the job seeker or the worker and appealed to people in leadership positions, especially men to desist from the practice.
Rev Mensah in a sermon during his first pastoral visit to the Saint Anthony's Catholic Church at Anwomaso said "The challenges confronting the nation are as a result of people's addiction to sin"
He said, "Christians should let their beliefs reflect in their daily lives, in order to help reduce the upsurge of social vices".
Rev Mensah appealed to parents and people in authority to make sure children are properly trained with good morals to take up the leadership of the nation in future since without such training, the country would have no future.
He said workers in the public sector must to be proactive in their daily activities, desist from malingering in order to adequately support the development of the nation.
Archbishop Mensah said, "People should stop the 'get rich quick' attitude which is gradually gaining roots in the country. This has brought about many social vices such as internet fraud and armed robbery".
He suggested that spanking children at school that had been stopped should be reintroduced to serve as a way of refining and shaping children as well as bringing them to order.
