Abuja — Bwari Area Council in the FCT has completed plans to open up ten new markets in partnership with property developers, adding that the new markets would compliment some of the existing ones and in some they would replace the old ones, Council Treasurer, Malam Musa Ubandoma said this yesterday at Kubwa.
Ubandoma said this during his tour of markets at Kubwa to see for himself why the council is generating less revenue and find ways to improve on revenue collection and generation.
He said the new markets would be sited at Dawaki, Kukwaba, PW, Phase 4, Mpape, 2-1, Kubwa Modern market, Phase 4 Shopping Plaza and Biazhin market.
According to him Bwari Area Council is trying to open new doors for revenue generation and collection.
"As our revenue allocation is going down, we need to improve on our internally generated revenue to compliment what we are getting to continue with the developmental project for our people," he said.
At Kubwa main market, Ubandoma called on the market management to immediately ask those shop occupants who turn the shops into homes to vacate or the council would revoke the allocation given to them.
"Shops are meant for business purposes not homes, those who are living the market should pack out or we will revoke the allocation," adding that, "if they want do business, they should commence immediately, otherwise they should pack out, many traders are there outside looking for shops," he said.
Responding the Chairman, Market Management, Malam Buhari Kubwa, told the Treasurer that most of the shop users were stubborn when they were inform on some orders or directives which were meant for their good.
"I will also called on the council to draft its Revenue Task Force here to work hand in hand with the market officials for effective and up date revenue collection," he said.
Kubwa also called for maximum cooperation and understanding between the market officials and the council, complaining that as some traders when penalize for an offence move to the Area Council where that decision was usually reversed.
"I also want to assured you that we will continue to encourage the shop users to keep the market clean and also access road should be provided within the market to enhance goods and persons movement within the market," he added.
He urged the council to take drastic action against revenue defaulters to serve as deterrent to others.
