Cameroon: GCE - 75 Excellence Awards for Best Bafut Students

The Bafut Elite Association (BELA) and the Bafut Council are on song again for promoting education with scholarships and excellence awards to students of Bafut extraction.

The 8th edition of the BELA Excellence awards on August 22nd, 2009 offered 44 scholarships and 30 Excellence awards to deserving and needy sons and daughters of the area. Beneficiaries were recruited from the lot who excelled in the 2009 session of the G.C.E general and Technical examinations. It was all about students who featured best in the sciences, management, engineering, arts, Bilingual and commercial disciplines while intelligent but needy students were encouraged to progress in academics with similar amounts in scholarships.

The initiative fetched a lot in money and certificates for the students who took home CFA 50.000, 30.000, and 20.000 each according to respective results in each discipline. In all, the BELA scholarship board with Dr. Chemuta Banda at the helm selected four students each per college for scholarships. Among all the schools that enrolled the students include GHS, GTHS, Bafut; GSS Mambu, GSS Obang, GSS Mundum, GTC Nforya, COTEC Bafut, PSS, PGSST Bafut, while excellence awards enlisted students of Bafut origin from colleges across the nation.

BELA and the Bafut council have stated preparedness to take the number of beneficiaries to100 during the next edition.This time around, BELA sounded off with their former chairman, Dr Raymond Asombang revealing an increase in the number of donors which helped the awards committee to increase the number of disciplines to cover awards. His majesty Fon Abumbi II of Bafut was around with traditional blessings. He saluted BELA for promoting education in the Bafut Fondom and committed to stand by the elite to promote peace , progress, and unity. The Bafut Elite Association according to the Fon is the light to take the area forward.The event at PGSST Bafut was cheered by the Mayor and the DO of the Bafut sub-division. Both men welcomed the initiative as a foundation for the development of Bafut children and subsequently, the council area with the support of cfa 500.000 from the council. Beneficiaries committed to rise to expectations and step into the shoes of their elders in future. In all, BELA spent about cfa 1.5 million in the excellence awards and scholarships this year with Mrs Che Christiana as the new national Chair lady.
