Nigeria: Nlumumba Adeh Wants Ex-Eagles to Borrow a Leaf From Garba Lawal

Obviously impressed with Garba Lawal's recent decision to join Nigerian premier league club Lobi Stars as a coach/player, former member of the House of Representatives Lumumba Dah Adeh has called on former members of the Super Eagles who are still active to emulate their team mate.

Recently, the former international and Olympic gold medallist, Garba Lawal disclosed to Trustsports that he has agreed to join the Makurdi based club as a coach/player.

Reacting to the development, Lumumba said what the former player has done is worthy of commendation and should be emulated by other retired Super Eagles players who are around in Nigeria.

He said even former Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha who has not hidden his readiness to contribute to the development of Nigerian football can do well by accepting to keep himself busy by playing maybe once a month for any premier league club of his choice.

Lumumba noted that if other stars like Tijani Babangida and Okocha would follow in the footsteps of Lawal and Rashidi Yekini who blazed the trail, the domestic league would receive a big boost.

He explained that once some of these former international players identify with the clubs, the crowd would come back to the stadiums.

"I am happy with what Garba Lawal has done. I have always advocated for these former internationals to play in the domestic league.

"Even Okocha can do well by playing for one of the clubs. He will not be playing for money but his presence alone will bring back the crowd to our stadiums. Some of these former players are still active and can play at least once in a while and that would really boost the league" he opined.

Lumumba, who contested for the NFF Presidency in 2007, however advised that clubs that would have the privilege of enjoying the services of these super stars must not fail to accord them the necessary respect.

"Most of us want these retiring former internationals to boost the league by featuring for some of the clubs but that is not to say they should be taken for granted. After all, they will not be playing for money.

"If someone like Okocha accepts to play for Rangers, it will be obvious that he only wants to support the club. How much can Rangers pay Okocha? And if it is money, is there any money that the player has not made while playing in Europe?" he queried.

Lumumba urged the ex-internationals to consider the clarion calls for them to be part of the domestic league.
