Lagos — The Universal Basic Education Board(UBEB) in Taraba has expended N1.2 billion from its 2007 counterpart funds to provide infrastructure in primary and junior secondary schools.
Chairman of the Board, Mr Hilkiah Bubajoda, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Jalingo that it was rounding off the execution of the 2007 UBE intervention projects which would qualify the board to draw funds for the 2008 projects.
He said the bulk of the money was spent on the construction and rehabilitation of schools as well as provision of furniture and other essential learning materials.
"When you compare the infrastructural development in schools in the state between 2007 and 2008, there is massive improvement through the school approach adopted by the board which makes it hard for anyone to identify a single non-renovated school in Jalingo," said the chairman.
Bubajoda said that the board had initiated various training and re-training programmes for staff to optimise their contribution towards instilling discipline and knowledge in the younger generations.
On absenteeism among teachers, Bubajoda said the board had constituted a "Quality Assurance Committee" to monitor and inspect schools in the eight school zones of the state.
He said the board had also devised a strategy to reduce congestions in classes by creating more arms for each class. The Chairman commended the state government for paying all the outstanding UBE counterpart funds up to 2007 and called on parents to partner with school adminstrations to ensure discipline in schools.
