Nigeria: FCTA Scraps Lugbe Village

Abuja — Where will I sleep this night?" the Eze Igbo, Eze John Okonkwo cried out yesterday as officials of the Department of Development Control pulled down the entire Zone 8 village of Lugbe village.

The officials, led by a Deputy Director, Alhaji Hamza Madaki, in company of Mobile Police had arrived the village as early as 9:00a.m. and started pulling town houses as residents wailed.

According to some residents who spoke to Leadership Sunday they said they were caught unaware as they were told that the FCT Minister, Adamu Aliero, had the exercise until further notice but only to wake up on the fateful morning to see their houses being pulled down.

They said the initial information available to them before the exercise that morning was that the exercise would only cover about 20 metres to the high tension line, but as at the time of filing this report yesterday, the demolition exercise had covered over one hundred and fifty metres.

Speaking exclusively to Leadership Sunday yesterday after he halted the exercise, the Deputy Director, Development Control, Hamza Madaki, spurned the claims by the residents that they were not adequately informed by of exercise.

"I only stopped the demolition because I gathered on good authority that some mischief makers had gone round and misinformed the residents that the exercise was not going to hold, hence, they could not make alternative accommodation," Hamza explained.

The deputy director consequently scheduled a meeting with residents of all affected areas that are pending, for Wednesday next week where he said they (residents) would be adequately informed and given some time that, according to him, would not exceed two weeks.

Speaking further, Hamza warned the residents who had written to the first lady and other authorities informing them that they were not adequately informed.

Meanwhile, motorists in the area made brisk business yesterday. Leadership Sunday observed that they already confused residents paid any amount they were charged by the available vehicles to park their valuables to where they will put up.

Scavengers were also seen at the scene of the demolition carting away scrapes from the rumbles.

But, unlike other demolition exercises in the past, there was no reported case(s) of petty stealing except that one Mr. Innocent Edward despite the agony residents were in, fought with his wife for opposing him when he said the family should put up in his cousin's place while she wanted him to rent a house immediately.
