Nigeria: The Nurtw Clash in Abuja

Abuja — A leadership tussle between rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) last week led to a bloody clash at the Jabi Motor Park in the Utako District of the Federal Capital Territory.

Although no life was lost in the fracas, it is estimated that property worth millions of Naira were destroyed. Police said that they arrested 30 persons and recovered a stockpile of weapons. The clash came in spite of a truce meeting between the warring factions and the FCT Commissioner of Police, John Haruna, during which all sides agreed to resolve whatever their differences were amicably and to keep the peace. This quarrel came on the heels of a similar crisis in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital in which three persons lost their lives in July.
