Nigeria: Unease as Garki Villagers Get Evacuation Order

Abuja — Controversy is brewing over the evacuation order issued to indigenes and inhabitants of Garki Village to relocate to the new Apo Site. Those affected say they are dismayed with the conduct of the Resettlement and Compensation Committee of the Federal Capital Development Authority, (FCDA).

The committee's director, (FCDA) Festus Esekhile, had, on August 10, 2009 written a letter to the inhabitants to move to their new site at Apo.

Reacting to the letter, however, Mr. Joel Dantani, Magajin Garki described the action of the FCDA committee as unacceptable, as most buildings allocated to the inhabitants has not been completed, just as infrastructure such as light, water, electricity and tarred roads have not been provided.

Mr. Dantani expressed dismay over the manner the resettlement committee allegedly conducted the affairs of its committee in secrecy, saying while most indigenes names were missing from the allocation, it is surprising that "foreign names" found their way into the list.

"They have allocated names to persons we think are fictitious. They should be open in the conduct of the exercise and not rush us out as if we are slaves," Dantani said.

But the FCDA, through the director, Resettlement and Conpensation, reacted saying they must move as about 90 per cent of the people have collected houses allocated to them and they cannot continue to remain in Garki Village.

"The non-indigenes also have plots there because you will recall that the whole site was initially revoked from non-indigenes and every other person including the Gbayi people. They are replacement plots," the director said.
