Super Eagles' hope of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was put on ice on Sunday, after playing 2-2 with Tunisia in Abuja.
Nigeria needed to win the match so as to revive its hope of qualifying for the World Cup, but poor defending after going in front twice robbed it of victory.
Nigeria's hope of not missing the World Cup now lies on Tunisia losing one of the remaining two matches, while Nigeria must win its remaining two matches against Mozambique in Abuja, and Kenya in Nairobi.
After the initial seizing up of the each other, Osaze Odemwingie put Nigeria in front on 23rd minutes, after a solo run with a right footer that hit the top of the net.
However, hardly had the ovation that greeted the goal died down than the Tunisians equalised through Sliti Nabil Taidar two minutes later, through a powerful left footer that sailed into the net with goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama having no answer.
It looked as if the Nigeria defence line thought that playing at home meant that the Tunisians cannot score. And they were punished by the Tunisians for such floppy defence.
After the equaliser, the team failed to make any reasonable move, rather, it was the Tunisians that were dictating the pace with their mass attack and mass defence tactics that kept Eagles at bay.
On resumption, Eagles coach, Shuaibu Amodu, made a tactical blunder with the substitution of Seyi Olofinjan for Michael Eneramo.
Though Eneramo got the second goal on 80th minute, the central defence, where Olofinjana operate from, became open with the Tunisians having a field day. And there was no surprise when they capitalised on this opening to equalise on 88th minute, when Eagles' tormentor, Zitouni Ali, rounded off the defence to give Oussma Dagari the ball, which he chipped over Enyeama for the second equaliser that may end Nigeria's dream of 2010 World Cup appearance.
Even before the equaliser, the Tunisians were better side on this day. Super Eagles looked like an un-coached side. Poor passes were its trade mark on day that it should make little or no mistakes.
The team recovery rate was nothing to write about as the Tunisian always outnumber Super Eagles defenders when they are on counter attack.
Coach Shuaibu Amodu is however still hopeful of qualifying for the World Cup, even as he blamed the players for the draw.
He accepted resonsibility, but said that the player approached the match lakaidasically. he said it was a mistake to have allowed Ogbuike Obasi stayed that long in the match but said that it was also done to allow him time.
The team assistant captain, joseph Yobo entirely blamed the players for the outcome of the match.
Yobo said the players were unprofessional in their approach, saying that they played to the gallary.
