Abuja — The Federal Road Safety Corps has asked the federal government to construct bridges or fly-overs along the Kubwa expressway in the Federal Capital Territory as a way of forestalling the regular occurrence of high-risk heavy traffic on the road.
The unit commander of the FRSC, Kubwa unit, under the FCT sector command, Assistant Corps Commander, Wale Okulenu, in an exclusive interview with Leadership, asked government to construct bridges at Dutse, Kubwa First Gate and Dei Dei junctions, saying the bridges would enable motorists along these junctions have easy turn-around as well as ensure free-flow of traffic into the city.
He also commended the federal government for embarking on expanding the dual lanes of the Kubwa way, saying more vehicles can now move on the road at the same time".
He attributed the heavy traffic in the road to high volume of motorists exiting from Dutse, Kubwa, Dei-Dei, Suleja, etc, and impatience.
However, Mr. Okulenu assured that the unit under him has been able reduce the traffic 'hold ups' only the "go-slow" has been pervasive.
"What we do is to deploy people to strategic points such as Dutse junction, FHA, 1st Gate, 2nd Gate and 2nd Galadima Gate, as well as ensuring driving on the route lane."
Speaking on the safety helmets, the unit commander stated that as a result of enforcement on motorcycle riders, about 200 of them were impounded.
"On 26th of August (2009), we started enforcing. We have impounded about 200 motorbikes. They pay a fine of N2, 000, but we make them to produce their helmets. We put the number of number plates on their helmets so that another person cannot use it."
He further stated that the unit command planned to visit churches and mosques to ask religious leaders to advise their members, especially during the 'ember' months, as 'the beauty of any journey is safe arrival.'
