Tanzania: Lukuvi Launches PCCB Drive for Corruption-Free Elections

The Government has appealed to stakeholders to support its campaign against corruption during the forthcoming civic elections in October and the General Election next year.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign by the Prevention of Corruption and Combating Bureau (PCCB), at Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Dar es Salaam yesterday, regional commissioner William Lukuvi, said left alone, the Government cannot tackle corruption.

Elaborating, Mr Lukuvi said corruption during elections, was just a manifestation of moral decay that has affected almost all sectors in government and some private institutions which are services oriented.

"Offering and receiving bribes is a criminal offence, and there is need for all Tanzanians to play their part and not a duty of any institution to do it single-handedly," said Lukuvi.

He said corruption was a cross cutting issue which has paralysed Government's performance and contributed so much to underdevelopment of the country.

"In education, graft results to examination papers leaking, in health patients are denied services, criminals walk scot free," emphasised the regional boss.

Prior to the regional commissioner's speech, the bureau's director of community education Ms Mary Mosha, said corruption in elections was a social enigma, which denies voters the right to put in power leaders of their choices.

Instead, said Ms Mosha, it gives room of leadership to incompetent people, contrary to the notion of good governance. She therefore urged voters to reject corrupt candidates.

She urged other stake holders like teachers, religious leaders, artists and the media, to support in all forms possible in to make the campaign a success.
