South Africa: Cabinet Endorses Football Friday Campaign

Cape Town — Cabinet has welcomed and endorsed the launch of the Football Friday campaign, which aims to spread World Cup fever amongst South Africans.

The campaign encourages South Africans to wear a football jersey every Friday, for the next forty weeks leading up to the World Cup.

There are only forty weeks to go until 11 June 2010 and the next important milestone is the Final Draw, which will decide the group stages of the tournament. This event also falls on a Friday, 4 December.

"Government joins the partnership in calling on all South Africans to support the Football Friday campaign by buying and wearing the Bafana Bafana jerseys every Friday until the world cup finals, to raise awareness about the hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and to show support for the national team," Government Spokesperson Themba Maseko on Thursday.

He added that Cabinet hoped South Africans would buy locally produced jerseys.

Maseko was briefing the media in Cape Town on the outcomes of Wednesday's ordinary Cabinet meeting.
