Nigeria: Developers Make Case for Govts' Contracts Awards

Developers handling the Kuje housing projects under the Public Private Partnership Scheme (PPP) have appealed to the Federal Government to share infrastructure costs with developers to enhance greater success of the PPP scheme.

The developers made this appeal when the Minister of State for Works, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs. Grace Ekpwhire inspected the Kuje Housing projects on Thursday in Abuja.

They further appealed for the release of title documents upon completion of housing units and allocation to beneficiaries while calling for ministry of Works to liaise with the FCT Police Command top provide adequate security for the houses.

"We pray for prompt resolution of all encumbrances and compensation issues. Compensation to be paid to developers for huge losses sustained as a result of these encumbrances."

They said that the issues of unpaid compensation, legal actions and injunctions, changes in designs and plans, and delays in projects take off, access roads to the layout, electricity supply are some of the challenges they face.

The Kuje and Lugbe housing projects consist of 800 and 240 housing units respectively and are being executed through the Public Private scheme to meet the housing target of this administration.

Speaking the Managing Director of Federal Housing Authority (FHA) Mr. Terver Gemade said that the housing projects will soon be commissioned

"We have been able to deliver about 2000 housing units for the past nine years through the PPA scheme. We are hoping to change the mode of delivery to system buildings and modular housing which will ensure that we turn out faster housing to the public. The surest way to mass produce homes is by system building. The conventional way we are used to building block by block is a long process and we cannot actually achieve much through that and that is the reason why for 36 years we are only able to produce an equivalent 36,000 housing units just barely a thousand housing units a year which is not good enough," he said.
