A management committee has been set-up to make sure the recently refurbished University of Botswana (UB) Stadium is fit for use by countries coming for next year's World Cup in South Africa.
The Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) executive secretary, Kitso Kemoeng and the University of Botswana (UB) director of sports, Dr Dele Akpata issued a joint press statement yesterday saying the use of the stadium will be restricted as a preservation measure to make it ready for practice sessions by World Cup teams.
The statement said the stadium was re-grassed in a bid to attract participants of the 2010 World Cup to hold training camps in Botswana.
"Accordingly, it is imperative to deliver the football pitch at the appropriate time in a good state," the joint statement said. Kemoeng and Akpata said the use of the stadium will be restricted until further notice.
"To that extent, both parties have set up a management committee which shall inter alia, ensure controlled usage of the UB football pitch by considering, approving or rejecting any or all requests made by interested parties to use the stadium," the statement added.
The move is likely to see Premier League clubs having limited access to the facility. Gaborone clubs lost substantial revenue last season as the majority of matches were played in stadiums outside the capital city.
