The Supers Eagles and their handler, Shaibu Amodu have continued to receive bashings and condemnations from Nigerians for the heartbreaking 2-2 draw against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in a crucial South Africa 2010World Cup qualifier a fortnight ago.
The latest condemnation is coming from erstwhile Super Eagles Coach Paul Hamilton, who said Amodu contributed in no small measure to the failure of the players to garner the much needed three points in the make or break tie.
According to the veteran coach, Amodu's failure to offer important tips to the when the match was 10 minutes away after scoring the second goal was responsible for the reasons inability to contain the visitors.
Hamilton says he expected the former BCC Lions coach to be on feet dishing out defensive instructions to the players.
"Amodu refused to win the crucial match, which has put Nigeria's hope of hoisting green-white-green flag in South Africa on the line. He sat down thinking that the Eneramo's goal had secured the needed victory for him. But unfortunately that was when he was expected to stand on his feet, telling the boys to desist from playing to the gallery. He is my colleague and I have to tell him the truth.
"Although, we saw Daniel Amokachie standing up and instructing the players to go back and defend the one-goal advantage, he is not the one in charge. Amodu is the one in charge, but he chose to sit and watch his boys giving Nigerians a hear-rending result," Hamilton lamented.
Described the performance of the players as nothing to write home about, the soccer tactician said though God gave them the match and ticket to South Africa 201they squandered it due to carelessness.
On introduction of new legs to strengthen the team, Hamilton disagreed, preferring to have the same set of players who faced the Tunisians prosecuting the two remaining matches against Mozambique at home in October and Kenya way in November.
"Introduction of new players to the Super Eagles will end up destroying the cohesion of the team. For instance, when Chinedu Obasi, who had not been part of the team for a long time, was brought in, his performance showed he had no understanding with other players on the pitch. That is the type of problem that introduction of new players at this crucial moment may cause," he warned.
He however advised Amodu to ensure that only players among the current ones who are mentally, physically and psychologically ready to win the two remaining matches are chosen for the two ties, adding that all hope is not completely lost.
