Harare — ZIMBABWE'S tennis ace Cara Black and her American partner Liezel Huber were late last night set to be involved in one of their biggest fights of the season at the US Open in New York.
The top seeds and co-world number ones were scheduled to defend their women's doubles title at the year's fourth Grand Slam against the all-powerful Williams sisters Serena and Venus.
Black and Huber marched into the final of this year's US Open women's doubles after beating fellow seasoned campaigners Rennae Stubbs and Samantha Stosur, both of Australia, in their rain-interrupted semi-final tie.
According to reports from Flushing Meadows in New York, when the rain started on Saturday the women's doubles semi-final match was underway. Stubbs and Stosur were leading by one set.
After finishing the match on Sunday, the US Open tennis 2009 results ended up with a great comeback from Black and Huber for the win. Unlike the rainy weather on Saturday, the weather on Sunday was beautiful. The number three-seeded team of Stubbs and Stosur had hoped to finish what they started on Saturday and advance to last night's women's double final.
But the number one-seeded team of Black and Huber had other plans. Black and Huber had plans to advance to their first Grand Slam final in 2009. Stubbs and Stosur had defeated Black and Huber in their last two meetings. On Saturday it looked like it would be a third win in a row.
On Sunday, Black and Huber took control of the match and won it in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Black and Huber were last night scheduled to face Venus and Serena Williams for the women's doubles championship.
This was Serena's first appearance on court after her outburst at a line judge in her defeat to Belgium's Kim Clijsters in the women's single semi-final on Saturday night. The Wiiliams sisters defeated Black and Huber in the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
They went on to beat Stubbs and Stosur for the Wimbledon title in London earlier this year. Meanwhile, Black and Huber are headed for the season-ending Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships in Doha, Qatar. The WTA Tour announced on Thursday last week that the co-ranked world number ones are the first team to qualify for the blockbuster event.
"We are very excited to have qualified for the Sony Ericsson Championships," said Black, the 30-year-old Zimbabwean.
"It's been a good season and we've been able to accomplish some great results, but winning the Championships is a major goal and Liezel and I look forward to going to Doha and attempting to win our third Championships title."
Black and Huber will join world number one Dinara Safina and number two Serena Williams who have already clinched spots in the singles competition in Doha.
The world's top eight singles players and top four doubles teams from the 2009 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season will compete for the coveted Sony Ericsson Championships title and a share of the record Championships prize money of US$4.45 million.
