Kampala — The UPDF on Saturday killed five Lord's Resistance Army rebels including a colonel during the ongoing operations in the Central African Republic (CAR).
Col. Santos Alit was killed in a battle that took place 15 kilometres northeast of Obo in CAR, the army spokesperson, Lt. Col Felix Kulayigye, said in a statement issued yesterday.
"Squads that remained in DR Congo to support the FARDC ( Congolese army) in the second phase of the operation against the LRA have registered yet another victory," he said.
The army also said captured one machine gun with 136 bullets, 24 sub machine guns with 18 bullets and two empty magazines.
The demise of Col. Alit follows the capture of Maj. Okot Atiak two weeks ago, who was commanding the group that guards LRA leader, Joseph Kony.
Col. Kulayigye said the army also recovered three laptops, two mobile phones, four accumulator batteries and two pairs of Congolese army uniforms.
