Angola: Former Combatant Praises Agostinho Neto Personality

Luanda — The former combatant and war veteran, André Matos Augusto, said Tuesday in Luanda that the September 17 is particularly for Angolans a special day for the celebration of the National Hero's Day and also marks Agostinho Neto's birthday.

The date was established in 1980, in memory of the first and late Angolan President, António Agostinho Neto, who proclaimed the national independence on November 11, 1975, after long years of Portuguese rule.

André Matos Augusto highlighted that it is a tribute paid to the one who is considered as the immortal leader of the Angolan revolution, in recognition of the his great intellectual skill, posture as statesman, freedom fighter, politician, man of culture and his contribute to the liberation struggle.

Speaking to Angop, André Matos Augusto highlighted that the Angolan nationalist was engaged in the armed struggle for the liberation of Namibia, while he was leading the Angolan people to fight against the Portuguese settlement.

António Agostinho Neto was born on September 17, 1922 in the locality of Kaxicane, northern Bengo province and graduated in medicine in Oporto University, in Portugal.

Agostinho Neto passed away on September 10, 1979, in Moscow, of disease.
