Kigali — Prime Minister Bernard Makuza yesterday officially launched the national classroom construction programme in the Musanze District.
Makuza who participated in the construction of five classrooms for Ecole Primaire Kitabura, in Kimonyi sector, called for the collective efforts of all Rwandans to meet the national targets.
The classrooms are meant to accommodate students enrolled under the 9-Year Basic Education (9-YBE) programme. "The schools belong to you. You should not wait for external help, this is the time to find a solution to our own challenges," Makuza told residents.
An estimated 3,172 classrooms worth Rwf36 bn are needed to accommodate students who will join the 9-YBE programme.
The Prime Minister urged the residents to consider education as the only heritage they can give their children and an investment which will a build knowledge-based economy.
Classrooms will accommodate over 168,000 students expected to join secondary school next year.
Makuza who is on a two-day tour of Musanze district' visited the Mudugudu settlement which was constructed for the vulnerable groups in Susa, Kinigi sector, a cement factory, and Urugaga Imbaraga, an association of farmers in the province.
On the tour, the premier was accompanied by the Minister of Local Government, Christophe Bazivamo, State Minister for Education Mathius Harebamungu, the Division Commander, Brig. Gen Alex Kagame, and local authorities.
