Bauchi — Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi state has appealed to the Federal Government to consider re-imbursing the state government after it did all it could to provide standard facilities ahead of the forthcoming 2009 U- 17 World Cup. Kaduna state had earlier asked for a refund for providing training pitches that was to be undertaken by the federal government.
The governor made the appeal in his monthly interactive session with journalists held at the government house where he stated that the state has invested so much in an effort to provide standard facilities for the championship scheduled for 24 October to November 15 this year.
He described the award given to him by the world soccer governing body (FIFA) as a surprise as he has never expected it after putting his best to ensure the provision of excellent facilities at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa stadium commended by FIFA.
"I never expected such award from FIFA. What I did was to make sure I provide all the necessary facilities that will give the state the hosting right of the event and it was later during the struggle that I realized that the kind of the artificial turf we provided at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa stadium is the only type in the country and the best. No wonder FIFA Vice President Mr. Jack Warner said Nigeria cannot host the senior World Cup unless it emulates Bauchi state in terms of providing standard facilities, "he said.
On whether he has the intention to take over the running of the stadium from the federal government, Governor Isa Yuguda explained that for now there is no need as it is still the property of the federal government and sees no reason why the state should consider taking over the stadium from the federal government.
He however, promised to ensure 24 hours surveillance at the stadium and warned those who may want to vandalize any of the facilities provided in regards to the hosting of the event to desist from the idea or face the wrath of the law, as he is not ready to take it lightly with anyone caught trying to sabotage government's effort.
"You should not be surprised that some people are already eyeing our computers, air conditioners, television sets, medical equipment or other equipment. Being the chief security officer in the state I will make sure there is 24hours surveillance in order to protect all these facilities" Yuguda added.
