Kampala — ONE person has died and 11 are nursing wounds after being beaten by stray dogs in Kamwenge district.

Living Bahangyi died at his home in Kabuye parish after contracting rabies.

Bahangyi, who had started barking like a dog, passed away after being admitted to Buhinga hospital in Fort-Portal town.

Emily Tukamubona, the town councillor, said many people have been bitten by the stray dogs but were dying silently for fear of being stigmatised.

She listed the affected areas as Kyabyoma and Kiziba in Kamwenge sub-county.

Tukamubona appealed to the veterinary department to avail drugs for treating rabies and to vaccinate all dogs.

The district veterinary officer, Dr. Alfred Kamanyire, said they had started vaccinating dogs after getting drugs from the ministry.

Francis Mwesigye, the LC3 chairperson, told a council session on Wednesday that there was an influx of stray dogs in the town.

The town authorities have resolved to kill any dog found loitering, while residents have been ordered to confine their dogs during the operation.
