Nigeria: Kano Emir Decries Power, Water Shortage, Insecurity

Kano — Apparently dissatisfied with the level of government's commitment in providing basic social amenities such as electricity, potable water and security, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, has passed a vote of no confidence on the government in these vital sectors.

Speaking yesterday at the Government House, Kano, when he paid a Sallah homage to Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, the emir said governments at all levels needed to wake up to their responsibilities by providing necessary amenities to their people.

The emir, who described power, water supply and security as indispensable foundations for any meaningful development, lamented that Nigerians were still in dire need of these basic necessities.Bayero, however, appreciated the effort of the Kano State government in the area of road construction. "We thank Kano State government under Malam (Dr.) Ibrahim Shekarau for its effort in road construction and expansion," he stated.

He acknowledged the effort being made by governments in the three tiers on healthcare programmes, especially in the eradication of communicable diseases such as polio and malaria. The monarch admonished people in the state to supplement government's fight against diseases by ensuring that their children are fully immunized.

Responding to the emir's address, Shekarau dwelled on the recent Boko Haram uprising in some parts of the country and described it as disastrous to peace and the image of Islam. The governor, who called on parents to verify religious views of those that teach their children, said there was need for parents to keep tab on where their wards go in pursuit of Islamic education.

He said the Boko Haram sect teaches in contravention of Islam. "They are not preaching true Islam but rather professing an ideology that would bring disunity and violence in the society," he said. According to him, but for the prompt intervention of his government and security agencies in the state, the Boko Haram problem that spread to Wudil town in the state would have spread to other parts of the state and become damaging.

Shekarau expressed appreciation to the emir of Kano for his advice to the administration and also Islamic clerics that conducted preaching sessions during Ramadan. He also thanked traders who subsidised prices of their goods in order to ameliorate suffering during the holy month.
