Andrew Mwenda, the Managing Editor of the Independent magazine and Charles Bichachi , an editor with the same magazine have been charged with sedition at Buganda Road Court.

The two who appeared before Magistrate Francis Dawa Matenga are accused of using seditious words in articles that where ran in the magazine.

According to the charge sheet from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Richard Buteera, "Andrew Mwenda and Odoobo Charles between 21st and the 27th of August, 2009, with an intention to bring into hatred, contempt and to excite disaffection against the person of the president, published on Page 5 of the Independent Magazine issue 074 under a subject title Weekly Spoof, a cartoon with seditious words."

The two denied the charges. After the charges were read to the two editors, Mr Mwenda told court that, "This government and Museveni are persecuting me. I am not guilty."

The two editors were released on a cash bail of shs200, 000 and will re-appear before court on October 15.
