Africa: Goalkeepers Need Serious Training, says Brazilian Experts

Brazilian coach Jose Nogueira has blamed inadequate training and keepers' poor attitude towards exercise as the main reasons the continent is not producing world class goalkeepers.

Nogueira (head coach) together with two other Brazilians Jose Portella (physique trainer) and Reuther Moreira (goalkeeping coach) are in the country.

They are also here to provide Ugandan coaches with enhanced skills in technical, tactical and physical aspects of football training, among others. "Since Nkono, who really can we think about when we talk about Africa?" wondered Nogueira, adding, "But when we talk of Brazil, you think of Dida (AC Milan), Julio (Ceasar, Inter Milan) Gomez (Spurs) ..., we can go on and on."

Cameroonian Thomas Nkono is the best keeper ever to come from Africa.

"That's why we are here. To teach these coaches tactical awareness, flexibility and above all change attitude (of goalkeepers) towards hard work," said Nogueira.

Goalkeeping coach Moreira and the other two indeed took local keepers' coaches through different drills at Nakivubo stadium on Wednesday. But Nogueira had mixed feelings about the coaches' response in general, so far. "Some understand fast but others do not know what to do. Hope we get better with time."
