Zimbabwe: Community Service for Possessing Mbanje

Harare — A Glen View man has been ordered to perform 38 weeks of community service after being found guilty of illegally possessing 1,1 kilogrammes of mbanje with a street value of US$110.

Emmanuel Makombora (24) was last week convicted on his own plea to possessing mbanje when he appeared before magistrate Mrs Tendai Rusinahama.

He was sentenced to 10 months in prison wholly suspended for three years. In addition, the court ordered Makombora to perform 38 weeks of community service at Glen View 1 Primary School.

On September 19 this year police detectives received information from a reliable source that Makombora was illegally in possession of mbanje.

They went to Makombora's house where upon arrival they identified themselves and the purpose of their visit. A search was conducted inside the house and around the premises, leading to the recovery of two plastic bags of mbanje that were hidden behind a sofa outside the house.

Makombora was immediately arrested and the mbanje was forfeited to the State for destruction.

Ms Memory Mukapa prosecuted.
