A renowned and inspiring Gambian sculptor, Pa Modou Sowe, based in Cardiff, Wales, has spoken of plans to set up a private art and cultural centre. The new centre which is expected to start operations in 2010 will be based in Brikama, Western Region.
Among the objectives of the centre would be to promote arts and culture as well as offer self employment opportunities to youths and promote eco-cultural tourism.
Mr. Pa Modou Sowe is the son of the founder of Brikama Craft Market, the late Pa Abdoulie Rabbih Sowe. He has been organizing inter cultural events across Europe for the past eighteen years.
Speaking to this columnist in an exclusive interview, Mr. Sowe said he has been tirelessly involved in creating a better understanding and appreciation of Gambian and African art while in Canary Island, Italy and United Kingdom.
This he said was aimed at encouraging tourists to visit Gambia. He added that his work includes organizing wood carving workshops and demonstrations, design craft workshop and demonstration of traditional African drums as well as conducting art and cultural lessons as part of celebrations marking Black history month, notably in 2004 at Reading, United Kingdom.
Mr. Sowe further revealed that he was a participant of United Nations seminar on cultural integration in 2004 which was aimed at integrating culture for world peace.
On his achievements, the Wales based Gambian artist said he successfully conducted an anti crime initiative with Reading College to reduce the high rate of crime in Oxford Road, Reading, Berkshire, which was the focus of a major police crackdown.
He also advised up coming artists to desist from drug abuse and engage in developing their skills.
He applauded government for what he called their gigantic steps aimed at promoting art.
