Rwanda: Regional Power Projects on Track - Butare

Kigali — The mooted regional power production and cross-boarder transmission lines will be ready in three years and their feasibility studies will be out by next year.

This was revealed by the State Minister for Energy, Dr Albert Butare ,who said that funds to finance the projects are already in place.

According to Butare, the hydro power plants of Rusizi II and Rusizi III that will be jointly exploited by DRC, Burundi and Rwanda, will have their feasibility studies completed by next year.

Upon completion, the two plants are expected to generate a significant amount of megawatts to reduce on shortages and black-outs that hold back economic growth within the three countries.

Meanwhile, the Rusumo plant which is to be exploited between Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi will generate 80MW.

Butare said all project studies are going on well and their finances will be availed by Africa Development Bank (ADB) and Dutch government.

He said that the projects will boost power to the national electric grid and should lead to a reduction in energy prices.
