Kenya: Medics Fight to Contain Cholera Spread

Nairobi — Medical experts are in Marsabit South District to avert the spread of cholera, which has claimed 15 lives.

A Doctors Without Borders team left their camp at Moite village in Loiyangalani Division for the area on September 24. Eleven people have died of the disease in the region.

The disease was reported in El-Molo Bay Location on Tuesday. By yesterday three people had died of cholera. A pregnant woman succumbed to the disease in Moite village on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Mr John Kuria, a driver with an NGO, was airlifted from Loiyangalani Town to Nairobi after contracting the disease.

He had driven staff from the NGO to monitor their projects in Loiyangalani town.

"Those who have died in El-Molo Bay are children under 15 years. Many others are admitted to hospital and the disease is spreading fast to other areas," local public health officer Lemaiyon Lenamira told Saturday Nation by phone.

Cholera was reported in Marsabit South district early this year where it claimed 18 lives.

Local MOH, a Dr Kassanga had earlier told the Saturday Nation that they had been forced to reopen El-Molo dispensary after the cholera outbreak.

Mr Lenamira yesterday said the 24 cholera cases were admitted to El-Molo dispensary.
