Nigeria: Police Foil Attempt By Militants to Snatch Gun Boat

4 October 2009

Abuja — The Marine Police Patrol Oron Waterway, Akwa Ibom, said on Thursday that it had foiled an attempt by militants to snatch one of its bullet- proof gun boats.

The boats were inaugurated by the Inspector- General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro, in Oron on Saturday. Sources said in Uyo that sporadic gun shots were heard on the high seas between midnight and 1 a.m, in a bid to seize one of the boats on patrol.

Mr Walter Rugbere, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, who confirmed the incident, said that no lives were lost.

According to the commissioner, the militants, who apparently came from the high seas, attempted to snatch the boat but the "supreme fire power of the police team repelled them."

Rugbere assured the people of the state that the police and other security agencies were combat ready to protect lives and property and appealed to the public to cooperate with the security operatives to flush out criminals. (NAN)
