Nigeria: Corps Members Fight Bird Flu in Jos

Lafia — Corps members in Nasarawa State under the aegis of the Agrarian club of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) say they are ready to participate in the fight against bird flu.

President of the club, Chinedu Omeiza said part of the measures to reduce the spread of the disease was to educate farmers, poultry dealers and butchers on the need to ensure proper hygiene.

Donating sanitary materials to butchers in Lafia central market, Omeiza said the club was concerned about the state of hygiene, especially in markets, saying it would do all it could to create the much needed awareness.

He noted that the club had assisted farmers in the vaccination of animals and de-worming of birds. .

Omeiza said the club embarked on the exercise not only to assist in eradicating diseases like Bird flu but other environmental diseases that could be harmful to the society.

The club, according to him was founded in 2006 by professionals to assist farmers in areas of difficulty and to re-emphasise the importance of agriculture.

The state desk officer on Avian Influenza, Dr. Ibrahim Azara while commending the club for embarking on the project assured that proper hygiene would go a long way in fighting Avian Influenza
