Angola: Over 40 Million Square Metres Demined in Benguela Province

Lobito — About 44.9 million square metres have been demined in Catumbela commune in the central Benguela Province.

This was said last Wednesday by the head of the provincial department of National Demining Institute (INAD) in Benguela, Paulino Diu.

Speaking to ANGOP, the official said that from February 2007 to August 2009, 330 anti-personnel landmines, seven anti-tank mines, 3482 non detonated devices and 4,233 ammunitions were removed.

According to him, the demining works were directed to economic objectives, such as the perimeter where the Lobito district oil refinery will be built, the Benguela district and Catengue commune road, Benguela's railways and the lighthouse of Lobito Port Admiralship, among others.

Benguela Province has four demining brigades.
