Ghana: Sodom & Gomorrah Eviction On Course

The brouhaha surrounding the eviction and demolition of the popular slum, Sodom and Gomorrah, has taken a new twist, with the relocation of the Agboloshie food hub, lorry station in the area.

Mr. Alfred Vanderpuije, Mayor of Accra and Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), explained in an interview that all commercial activities in the area would be halted, to pave way for the eviction exercise.

"Any moment from now, the disconnection of water and electricity will take off. The yam market will be relocated to Amasama," he said.

He said the final notice of a possible eviction to the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah expired on Wednesday, and the AMA would not relent in its efforts to carry on with the eviction exercise.

Currently, wooden structures in the area are being converted into concrete structures, but the AMA said it had not given any building permit to anyone, as their archives had proven so.

This, inside sources say, has raised the anger of the City Mayor, and the AMA is to embark on strategies that would surprise their stay in the area.

Mr. Vanderpuije said the location factor of Sodom and Gomorrah was very prime, and that the AMA cannot afford to sink money without achieving its purpose of modernising the city.

He said the occupancy of the squatters at the area contravenes the Local Government Act 462, of the 1993 Constitution Section 64, Subsections two (2) and three (3).

He noted that Sodom and Gomorrah has to go down, to serve as a deterrent to residents in other slum areas such Abuja, Babylon, Noahshen (Noah's Ark) and others.

On human rights institutions wading into the intended action, Mr. Vanderpuije said the current environmental situation at the slum area should not be entertained to the extent of "raising children in such filthy places."

He said the children of Sodom and Gomorrah deserve better, and that the AMA would go all out to ensure that their fundamental human rights are also protected.

The AMA boss however, commended those who had taken bold steps to relocate, and indicated his outfit's preparedness to assist anyone willing to relocate.

He also urged the youth in the area to allow themselves be integrated into the Youth and Agricultural Module under the NYEP in their various regions.
