Nigeria: Architects Task FG On Mass Housing

Ilorin — Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) has tasked the Federal Government to subsidise prices of building materials, so that the masses can have access to accommodation.

Kwara state chairman of the NIA, Niyi Omokanye, said this in Ilorin, at a press conference to mark the "World Architecture Day."

Omokanye said, "today, as a result of the global economic meltdown, prices of building materials are very expensive unless government subsidises them, the peoples' desire to own their homes will be very difficult to achieve."

He said the way and manner building materials prices are skyrocketing everyday, especially cement, sand, nails, among others, it would be hard for individuals to own houses if government refuses to intervene.

Omokanye who also called on the National Assembly to ensure quick passage of the National Building Code, said its passage would go a long way in eliminating wastage of lives and properties.
