Jalingo — Following the failure of Taraba State government to implement the 27.5 percent Teachers Salary Structure (TSS), as agreed by the Governors' Forum, the state chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to join the ongoing strike action by the state branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
Briefing newsmen at the end of the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting at the NLC Secretariat in Jalingo, the Vice Chairman, Comrade Jonah Jatau said the union had been following the dispute between the NUT and the state government with keen interest.
He said Governor Danbaba Suntai was part of the Governors' Forum that went into negotiation with NUT and signed the agreement last year, saying that the governor had last August, promised to implement the agreement from January 2009, but to their dismay, he did not keep his promise.
Jatau said since teachers have been on strike and nothing was done by the state government, the state chapter of the labour union would not allow the situation to continue because the future of the state depended on the education of the children.
He urged the state government to, as a matter of urgency, implement the 27.5 percent TSS or the state chapter of the NLC would join the teacher in the strike action.
