Kenya: Reporters Learn Legal Matters

Nairobi — Nation Media Group journalists will confidently report on court and legal matters after an ongoing course at the Kenya School of Law.

NMG's editorial director Joseph Odindo told the opening ceremony that journalists should have legal knowledge to enable them to handle their work with ease. "Journalists with legal knowledge will be able to champion what is of great concern to the public," he said.

The course, Mr Odindo said, would not only enable the 15 journalists from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to cover legal matters but also effectively report on the judiciaries in the three countries.

The five-day course is expected to help the journalists avoid defamation, libel and infringement of copyright law in their work.

The director of KSL Professor Kulundu Bitonye said: "NMG has taken a great leap of faith. People should understand their rights and limitations and who best can champion such rights other than the media."
