10 October 2009

Togo governement and the three main political parties were about to reach an agreement on the name of the future chairman of the Independant National Electoral Commission (CENI), but «they failed to do so», said friday Pascal Bodjona (photo), minister for Territorial Administration and Spokesman of the government.

«After the talks we held in Ouagadougou, the three political parties (RPT, UFC, and CAR) continued discussions in Lome in order to reach an agreement on who will chair the Electoral Commission. We were about to reach that agreement but we failed to do so», said Mr Bodjona.

The election of a new chairman is scheduled for monday under the supervision of Elder Jean Claude Atsu Homawoo.

Henri Kolani was recently elected Chairman of the Electoral Commision, but the CAR and the UFC did not approve of him. The contention was referred last week end to the mediator Blaise Compaoré.

The presidential election is planned is expected to be held early 2010 in Togo.
